MSPAINT – Drift

Mississippi synth-punk outfit MSPAINT continues its creative momentum with “Drift,” the opening track from its upcoming EP “No Separation,” which will be released on May 23rd via Convulse Records.

“Drift” showcases the band’s ability to navigate between crushing heaviness and striking melody, built on a foundation of distorted bass, mutated synths, and propulsive drumming that collides with mononymous vocalist Deedee’s signature roar.

This new EP follows their acclaimed 2023 debut album “Post-American”, which established MSPAINT as a singular aggressive force in music. Rather than resting on their laurels, “No Separation” finds the band refining their unique approach while pushing into new territory. The project was recorded and co-produced by Show Me The Body’s Julian Cashwann Pratt and Harlan Steel, alongside MSPAINT’s own Nick Panella, resulting in what’s promised to be some of their most thunderous moments and “downright beautiful writing to date”.

Coming from Hattiesburg’s underground scene, MSPAINT stands out for incorporating keyboards in a space where such elements are relatively rare. The band has built a reputation through relentless touring with acts like Soul Glo, Beach Fossils, Twitching Tongues, and Spirit of The Beehive, emerging as “a well-oiled creative machine” in the process.

Nick Panella offers insight into the band’s collaborative creative process: “Most of our music is genuinely inspired by our relationships to each other. We bring together disparate musical philosophies and try to marry them and create our own community that can accept those differences and actually thrive as a result of them.” This philosophy extends to their understanding of originality, which Panella suggests “ultimately isn’t about creating something new as much as it’s about navigating your own inner world and the inner world’s of those directly around you until you’ve learned something that hasn’t been learned before.”
